CASTING BREAKDOWN FOR EPIC NEW MUSICAL "SOVIET ZION" PLUS NEW-WRITING REVUE

The A STAGE KINDLY New Musical Theatre Initiative are casting for two shows - the epic new musical SOVIET ZION by Giles Howe and Katy Lipson to be performed this summer (and beyond) and also a showcase of new-musical theatre writing to be performed in London this summer.

SOVIET ZION is an epic new sung-through musical looking at thirty years of the lives of three Jewish families involved in the strange but true struggle to create a Yiddish homeland in Siberia - "Birobidzhan". You can find out more at: www.sovietzion.com. This recital is the first time the feature-length performance of the show will have been presented, and it will be performed on 24th, 25th, and 26th August 2010 at The Rosemary Branch Theatre in London, MD'd by Giles Howe and Katy Lipson with Vik Sivalingam of the RSC.

The new-writing revue will comprise of some of the highlights of the A STAGE KINDLY back-catalogue of international new musicals, and will be performed on three nights (tbc) between 20th-31st August 2010 in Central London. Both shows are part of the prestigious London Fringe Festival.

Payment for either project is a profit share. We are looking to take SOVIET ZION show on tour next year and anticipate an exciting few months; now is a great time to get involved with the show.

We will be making both video and sound recordings of both shows and using these extensively in promotion of both projects within and beyond the industry around the world; this is a great chance not only to have a hand in creating a role but also for worldwide exposure.

The audition for both shows will take place on Sunday 18th July. Please only apply if you can make the audition date and the dates of the performance.  The audition starts at 10am. We audition in a group environment and if you are successful you may be expected to stay until 5pm.

We will inform you of the Cenrtal London location once we have looked through all CV applications.

A STAGE KINDLY are looking for exceptional classical-crossover singers to voice the following lead roles:

Mirele Liberman

Mirele is one of the main characters. She needs an uncommonly dramatic and unusual mezzo/soprano voice (think: Gina Cigna) capable of many colours; with both a strong operatic chest and head voice, and maybe a belt. She is Iser's wife and Zofia's mother. A hopeful pioneer of the new state, after her husband leaves the region to seek a better life, she falls into a deep heartbreak and eventually looses her sight. Starting the show in her 20s and ending it an old woman, this is a great dramatic and tragic part to showcase a strong voice.

Iser Liberman

Iser could either be a tenor or a baritone, with a similar playing age to Mirele. Iser arrives with the rest of his family, though unsatisfied that life in the region can fulfil the expectations he has for his family he leaves soon after arriving and effectively disappears for thirty years! But he does indeed return, and the third act is dominated by his drama. He is a fairly timid and cautious man, with a good heart and is motivated by wanting the best for his family. We find out after his return what happened to him during his departure, including his experiences of surviving WWII and the War of Independence…

Zofia Liberman

Zofia begins the show a young teenager and ends it a mature woman, so it's a great role to demonstrate strong acting and a versatile voice. Zofia is essentially the main character of the show, which follows her arrival in the region as a teen, her first marriage and it's dissolution, her strange relationship with G-d, and her second (much happier!) marriage. Zofia is a lyrical soprano yet with both a strong mix and chest to compliment a strong head voice (think: Judy Kuhn or 'Christine' in Love Never Dies).

Bayla Levin

Bayla is a large lady with a big voice. Brash and loud (think: Bette Midler), she does mostly a lot of belting but needs a strong soprano as well (ideally up to a B). She is the most comic character of the show, though has her darker sides, too. She was very reluctant to follow her husband Oskar to the region, leaving their comfortable life in America to brave the Siberian winters and never quite acclimatises to life there, eventually persuading her family to move to Israel. She and her husband Oskar often bicker like children, and she seems to wear the trousers in their relationship and also crack the whip over her son.

Oskar Levin

A rotund American fur-trader with a strong head for ideals, he uproots his family and business to Birobidzhan to escape the Great Depression and support the world's first Jewish state. He is a nice guy, and likes to spoil his son, though lives in the shadow of his overbearing wife. Vocally he is a baritone (think Michael Ball).

David Levin

David is a tenor. He starts the show a teenager and leaves in his late twenties. He is quite flashy and confident, a bit of a spoiled brat (think John Travolta in Grease or a young Ben Stiller). This impresses the local peasants (not least of all Zofia whom he later marries) but really he's quite immature and a mummy's boy! At the bequest of his overbearing mother, he abandons his wife and child to move with his parents to Israel where he joins the army and is never heard of again…

Zuriel Cohen

Zuriel is analogous to Topol in Fiddler on the Roof! A proud and orthodox religious man with a big belly, a big heart and a loud laugh, he is a thinker and a wise man with a calm, old, and patient though empassioned soul. He is a baritone in his 40s or 50s (think Tommy Körberg).

Frumke Cohen

Married to Zuriel, she is also very religious and of a similar age. She is quite a quirky housewife, with big eyes and a skinny body (think: Olive Oil from Popeye!). She has a fluttery soprano voice like Kathryn Grayson or Disney's Snow White and potters about the house obsessively keeping it in order.

Habakkuk Cohen

Habakkuk is a studious, bookish chap in his 20s. From a religious family, he is modest and kind and patient and cheerfully accepts the role of step-father to Zofia's young son. He is a tenor (think: Peter Jöback or Kevin Odekirk).

Chorus

We may also be looking for four ensemble members - two males, two females - who may also swing, though this is yet to be confirmed. Please email us specifically if you are interested in auditioning for a chorus part and not a lead.

If you are interested in being considered for any of the above roles, please email your CV and headshot with a covering letter and ideally links to any MP3s or videos of you in performance to astagekindly@aol.com
